Nagpur: A 21-year-old man died by suicide at his residence in Girija Nagar under the Bhandewadi police station limits on Saturday night, August 9, after he was allegedly accused by a neighbour of stealing ₹3,000.

The deceased has been identified as Honey Tansram Nirmalkar, a resident of Lal Shala, Girija Nagar.

According to police, the incident occurred around 9.30 pm on August 9. Honey was reportedly at home when two men from the neighbourhood, identified as Rahul Borkar and a tenant named Anand, were involved in an argument.

Honey and his mother reportedly went to the spot to find out what had happened. During the argument, Borkar allegedly accused Honey of stealing ₹3,000 from him and abused him.

The landlord of the house where Borkar was staying reportedly intervened and told the parties to come the next day and discuss the matter.

Honey and his mother subsequently returned home. Police said Honey had consumed alcohol at the time. After reaching home, he allegedly shut the door from inside and told his mother that he would hang himself. His mother reportedly did not take the statement seriously and thought he was joking.

Honey then allegedly used a bedsheet to hang himself from the ceiling fan at the house.

After noticing the incident, family members rushed him to Government Medical College and Hospital (Mayo Hospital), Nagpur, for treatment. However, doctors examined him and declared him dead.

Based on the statement of the complainant, Bhandewadi Police registered an accidental death case under the relevant provisions of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS), corresponding to Section 174 of the CrPC.

Police are conducting further inquiries into the circumstances surrounding the death, including the altercation and the alleged ₹3,000 theft accusation.
