Nagpur: An auto-rickshaw driver was allegedly assaulted and injured with a knife near Ambazari Lake after he was seen talking to a woman known to him, police said.
According to the Ambazari Police, the incident took place on August 9 between around 8 am and 10:30 am near the steps of Ambazari Lake. The complainant, identified as Sanjay Ramratan Sharma (22), was reportedly driving his auto-rickshaw (MH-49-CF-4239) from Ambazari Road towards Burdi after dropping off a passenger.
Police said Sharma spotted a woman he knew near the lake and stopped to speak with her. At that time, her friend, Shubham Nitanvare (around 20), allegedly approached him and questioned him about talking to her.
The accused allegedly abused Sharma during the argument, pulled out a small knife from his pocket and struck him on the left shoulder, causing an injury.
Sharma was subsequently taken to Government Medical College and Hospital (GMCH), Nagpur, where he is undergoing treatment.
Based on Sharma’s statement, Ambazari Police registered a case under relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), including provisions relating to voluntarily causing hurt and intentional insult. Police said the accused has no previous criminal record.
The Ambazari Police are investigating the circumstances surrounding the assault.
