Rewa, Madhya Pradesh: BJP MP Janardan Mishra sparked controversy on Sunday after making a remark while defending the Centre's E20 ethanol-blended petrol policy during an event to inaugurate new flight services from Rewa to Bhopal and Kolkata.

Responding to criticism of ethanol-blended fuel, Mishra questioned demands for pure petrol, saying, "Will pure petrol come from your father's house?" His remarks have since drawn attention on social media and in political circles.

Explaining his position, the Rewa MP said India produces only around 20% of its crude oil domestically, while the remaining 80% is imported, making the country vulnerable to global supply disruptions.

He also referred to the ongoing geopolitical tensions affecting international shipping routes, including disruptions around the Strait of Hormuz, arguing that such developments have increased the cost and complexity of importing oil.

Defending the government's ethanol blending programme, Mishra said blending ethanol with petrol is aimed at reducing India's dependence on imported fossil fuels.

He also claimed that Brazil successfully operates vehicles on high ethanol blends and that automobile manufacturers in India have confirmed the compatibility of vehicles with ethanol-blended fuel.

The Centre has been promoting E20 fuel as part of its strategy to improve energy security, reduce crude oil imports, lower emissions, and support domestic ethanol production.

The remarks come amid an ongoing political debate over the E20 policy, with opposition leaders raising concerns about its impact on vehicle performance and maintenance costs, while the government maintains that the programme has been introduced following technical standards and industry consultations.
