Nagpur: Tehsil police have registered a case after a 17-year-old girl, who was allegedly married off before attaining legal age, gave birth to a baby at Government Medical College and Hospital (GMCH), Nagpur.

According to the police, the girl was 17 years, 11 months and 21 days old when the alleged marriage took place. The case came to light after a medical report was received by Tehsil police following her delivery on September 7.

During her statement, the girl reportedly told police that she had married a 28-year-old manaccording to customary rituals with the consent of both families. She stated that she was happy at her matrimonial home and did not face any problems after the marriage.

However, police said the girl’s minor status was allegedly known to her husband and members of her in-laws’ family. Despite this, they allegedly facilitated the marriage. Police further alleged that the husband established a physical relationship with the minor, resulting in her pregnancy and subsequent birth of a baby boy.

The case has been registered against the 28-year-old husband, his 50-year-old father, 45-year-old mother and other members of the in-laws’ family, along with the person who allegedly solemnised the marriage and the girl’s mother.

Tahsil police have invoked Sections 6, 10 and 12 of the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act and Sections 9, 10 and 11 of the Prohibition of Child Marriage Act, 2006, along with relevant provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS).
