Nagpur: Two unidentified men allegedly duped a 70-year-old woman by posing as utensil polishers and stole her gold chain worth around ₹75,000 in Nandanvan area, police said.

The incident took place at a residence in Chitnis Nagar, along Umred Road, under Nandanvan police station limits, between September 4 and September 6.

According to the complaint filed by Megha Nilkanth Tabhane (41), a private college professor, her mother Pushpa Nilkanth Tabhane (70) was at home when the two unidentified men approached her.

The accused allegedly claimed that they could polish utensils and demonstrated the polishing of their own silver ring to gain the elderly woman’s trust. They then allegedly offered to polish her gold chain weighing around 14 grams and valued at ₹75,000.

According to police, while pretending to polish the chain, the accused allegedly used sleight of hand to take it away and fled from the house. The woman later realised that she had been cheated.

Based on the complaint, Nandanvan police registered a case under relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) for cheating and criminal conspiracy. Police are investigating the incident and attempting to identify the accused.
