Nagpur: In a swift and commendable action, Sadar Police on Tuesday, May 20, filed a chargesheet within just two hours against a man accused of molesting a woman relative, under the provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) 2023.

The accused, identified as Mohammad Ashfaq Nazir Sheikh (47), a labourer residing in Goa Colony near the school for the disabled in Sadar area, allegedly harassed the complainant and her sister over the past two years. As per the complaint, the accused—who is a relative and lived in the same house—repeatedly made physical advances and inappropriate gestures toward the victim and her sister, demanding sexual favours. Due to this, he was thrown out of the house by the complainant’s brother.

Despite being ousted, the accused continued to visit the complainant’s house and allegedly tried to exploit situations when she was alone, attempting to establish physical relations. The most recent incident occurred when the accused entered the complainant’s home without permission while she was asleep, lay beside her on the bed, and began touching her inappropriately. The victim screamed, prompting the accused to flee the scene.

While the complainant and her brother were heading to the police station to file a report, the accused intercepted them and allegedly threatened them against reporting the crime. Nonetheless, the victim lodged a formal complaint at Sadar Police Station.

Based on the victim’s statement, an FIR was registered under Sections 74, 75, 76, 78, 79, 296, and 351(2) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, 2023, under guidance from Senior Police Inspector Manish Thakre and team members including API Sadiya Somankar, API Nilesh Ghogare, and staff members Durgesh Thakur, Sandeep Sadashiv, Mohansingh Thakur, Nilesh Lode, Dnyaneshwar Wakudikar, Sachin Kawale, and Rupesh Hivarale, all attached to Sadar Police Station.

The crime detection team swiftly tracked down the accused, took him into custody, and presented him before the investigation officer. Upon interrogation, the accused confessed to the crime. He was arrested at 1:56 PM on May 20, following the guidelines laid down by the Hon’ble Supreme Court.

In a remarkable move demonstrating efficiency and commitment to justice, the Sadar Police completed all necessary documentation and submitted the chargesheet in court within just 2 hours of arrest, supported by substantial evidence and witness statements.

This action reflects the police department’s proactive approach and dedication to ensuring swift justice for victims of sexual offences under the newly implemented legal framework.
