Nagpur: Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to Nagpur on March 30 for a series of private functions resulted in government expenditure of nearly ₹30 lakh, according to information obtained under the Right to Information (RTI) Act by activist Ajay Bose from Badnera.

Key Details of the PM’s Visit:

During his one-day visit, PM Modi participated in various private events, including visits to:

  • Hedgewar Smruti Bhavan, Reshimbagh
  • Deekshabhoomi, a prominent historical site
  • The foundation stone ceremony of Madhav Netralaya Eye Hospital at Vasudev Nagar, Hingna Road

The visit was part of the centenary celebrations of the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) and other associated programs.

Government Expenditure Breakdown:

According to district collectorate records, the total cost of the visit included:

  • ₹16.78 lakh spent by the Public Works Department (PWD) for road barricading along the Prime Minister’s route—from the airport to Hingna Road—for security and traffic control.
  • ₹9 lakh allocated to Mahesh Travels, the official government vehicle supplier, for providing a convoy of cars for the Prime Minister and his delegation.
  • ₹4.58 lakh incurred on breakfast and meals for the Prime Minister’s team and aircraft crew, catered by the airport restaurant and service providers on board the special aircraft and helicopter.

Public Concern Over Use of Taxpayer Funds:

Despite being officially classified as a private visit, the large-scale use of public resources—vehicles, catering, and security arrangements—has raised questions among activists and citizens about the appropriateness of deploying taxpayer money for such events.

Activist Ajay Bose commented, “Though the visit was private in nature, the expenditure incurred from government funds has sparked public concern regarding transparency and accountability in the use of public money.”
