Nagpur: As the Maharashtra Assembly elections draw near, concerns over the misuse of social media are growing, with platforms increasingly being used to spread misinformation that could influence voters’ perceptions. The latest incident involves a fake list of Congress candidates circulating online, which has sparked controversy and raised questions about the authenticity of information being shared.
The Maharashtra Congress has officially dismissed the list as fake, stating that no official list of candidates for the Maharashtra Assembly Elections 2024 has been released yet. The party made a post on X (formerly Twitter) urging the public not to believe any rumors, assuring that they would soon release the official list through proper channels.
Congress leader Pawan Khera also clarified the situation on X, emphasizing that the candidate list circulating on social media is entirely fabricated and that the Congress Party has not issued any such list for the upcoming elections.
This clarification from the Congress Party comes in response to the Election Commission’s announcement that voting in Maharashtra will take place on November 20, with the counting of votes scheduled for November 23. The current term of the state government is set to expire on November 26.
Earlier this year, the Congress Party had shown strong performance in the Lok Sabha elections as part of the Mahavikas Aghadi alliance, winning 30 seats, with Congress itself securing 13 of those. As the Assembly elections approach, the spread of fake information on social media remains a significant concern, highlighting the need for vigilance against digital manipulation.
