Nagpur: The Unit 5 team of the Crime Branch seized a substantial quantity of opium during a raid conducted in Kapil Nagar area on Wednesday, May 14 afternoon. The operation, carried out under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act, led to the arrest of a 47-year-old man while another accused from Jharkhand remains absconding.
The action took place at Plot No. 259, Babadeep Singh Nagar, Nari Road, under Kapil Nagar Police Station limits, around 1:40 pm.
Accused Identified as Harmitsingh Darshansingh Guram (47), a resident of Babadeep Singh Nagar, Plot No. 259, Nari Road, Kapil Nagar, Nagpur. A man named Gautam, reportedly a resident of Gumla, Jharkhand, is still at large.
Seized Material Includes:
- 2.469 kg of Opium (estimated value ₹4,93,000)
- Cash ₹96,700
- Electronic weighing machines (small and large) worth ₹7,000
- Two mobile phones valued at ₹21,000
- 50 ziplock pouches
Total value of the seized material: ₹6,18,550
According to officials, the raid was conducted based on a confidential tip-off. The Crime Branch team followed all procedures under the NDPS Act while conducting the search in the presence of two independent witnesses. The opium and other incriminating material were recovered from the residence of the accused.
After medical examination, the accused was handed over to Kapil Nagar Police Station for further legal action. Offences have been registered under Sections 8(c), 17(b), and 29 of the NDPS Act.
A search operation is currently underway to locate the absconding co-accused from Jharkhand.
