Nagpur: In a moment of pride for Nagpur and Indian chess, 19-year-old Divya Deshmukh scripted history by defeating veteran Grandmaster Koneru Humpy in the final of the FIDE Women’s Chess World Cup to become the first Indian woman champion of the prestigious tournament.

The all-Indian final, held in Batumi, Georgia, went down to the wire. After two days of classical games ended in draws, the winner was decided in a rapid tie-breaker on Monday. Divya, playing with black pieces, held her nerves to beat 38-year-old Humpy in the second rapid game, securing her biggest career triumph so far.

With this remarkable victory, Divya Deshmukh not only lifts the World Cup trophy but also earns the coveted Grandmaster (GM) title and qualifies for the upcoming Candidates Tournament, the gateway to the Women’s World Championship.

A native of Nagpur, Divya’s rise in the chess world has been steady and inspiring. Her victory over one of India’s most respected players marks a generational shift in Indian chess and is a testimony to her composure, strategy, and skill under pressure.

Divya’s triumph has sparked celebrations in Nagpur’s chess circles, with coaches, mentors, and enthusiasts hailing her achievement as a milestone moment for Indian women in sports.

The win also places Divya firmly among the world’s elite chess players and strengthens India’s position in the global chess arena.
