Nagpur: A 67-year-old doctor from Nagpur was allegedly duped of ₹7.49 lakh after an unidentified cyber fraudster contacted him over the phone on the pretext of completing his online KYC and allegedly tricked him into installing a malicious APK file.

The incident was reported at Institute of Surgical Pathology, Niti Gaurav Complex, first floor, Ramdaspeth, under the jurisdiction of Sitabuldi police station.

According to the complaint filed by Dr Raghavendra Ravi (67), a resident of Nagpur, he received a phone call from an unidentified person while he was present at his institute on July 30.

The caller allegedly told the doctor that his online KYC needed to be completed and instructed him to download WhatsApp. The caller then allegedly directed him to download an APK file and perform certain steps.

The doctor followed the instructions provided by the caller. Shortly afterwards, ₹7,49,851 was allegedly transferred from his ICICI Bank account without his authorisation.

Realising that he had been duped, the doctor approached the police and lodged a complaint.

Based on his report, Sitabuldi police registered a case against the unidentified accused under Sections 318(4) and 319(2) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) along with relevant provisions of the Information Technology Act.

Police are investigating the fraudulent transaction and attempting to identify the person who contacted the doctor. Investigators are also examining the APK file, phone number, bank transaction trail and other digital evidence to trace the cyber fraudster.

The incident highlights the risks associated with downloading applications or APK files shared by unknown callers, particularly during purported KYC or banking verification processes.
