Nagpur: The Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI), Nagpur, has seized 2.165 kg of foreign-origin smuggled gold worth approximately ₹3.09 crore from a passenger at Nagpur Railway Station.

Acting on specific intelligence regarding the movement of foreign-origin gold allegedly smuggled into India through the Indo-Bangladesh border, DRI officers intercepted a passenger travelling on the 12102 Jananeshwari Express at Nagpur Railway Station.

During the search, officials recovered 16 bars of foreign-origin gold weighing 2.165 kg. The gold bars had been allegedly defaced to conceal their foreign origin and were tightly packed in brown adhesive tape before being wrapped in old newspapers.

According to the DRI, the passenger admitted to receiving, concealing and transporting the smuggled gold for delivery to another person. The seized gold, valued at around ₹3.09 crore, was taken into custody under the provisions of the Customs Act, 1962.

The passenger was subsequently arrested in connection with the case.

The seizure is part of the DRI’s efforts to curb the illegal movement of smuggled gold through railway and other transportation networks. Officials are now investigating the source of the gold, the intended recipient and the wider smuggling network involved in its movement from the Indo-Bangladesh border.

Further investigation is underway to identify other persons linked to the smuggling operation.
