Nagpur: Sitabuldi police have registered a case against a man for allegedly making objectionable remarks against Dr BR Ambedkar and posting statements opposing reservation on Instagram, which police said hurt the religious sentiments of the Buddhist community and could create social tension.

The accused has been identified as Indrajit Singh, who allegedly operates the Instagram account @indra43639. A case was registered on August 7 following a complaint by Kshitij Dilip Ramteke, 27, a solar agency operator and Buddhist community activist.

According to the complaint, an agitation was organised at Samvidhan Chowk near the Dr BR Ambedkar statue in Sitabuldi on July 23 by the Cockroach Janata Party, and Ramteke had participated in the protest.

Police alleged that Singh subsequently made objectionable statements against Dr Ambedkar through his Instagram account. The complaint further alleged that he made remarks against reservation and attempted to create a sense of discord among members of society.

Based on the complaint, Sitabuldi police registered an offence under relevant provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) and the Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Act. Police have also invoked provisions corresponding to offences relating to deliberate acts intended to outrage religious feelings and statements promoting enmity.
