Nagpur: A 22-year-old man was allegedly threatened and abused after refusing to pay ₹50,000 demanded as extortion by a person he had met while both were lodged in Nagpur Central Jail. The incident was reported under the Kapil Nagar police station area.

According to the police complaint, the complainant, Vansh Vinod Yadav (22), a driver residing in Kashinagar, Nari Road, had met the accused, Arif Bengali (27), while they were in Nagpur Central Jail in connection with an NDPS case.

After both were released from jail, they allegedly met once. Police said that between August 24 and August 26, Bengali allegedly contacted Yadav through phone calls and WhatsApp calls and demanded ₹50,000 from him.

When Yadav refused to pay the money, the accused allegedly abused him and threatened him with dire consequences.

Based on the complaint, Kapil Nagar police registered a case under provisions relating to extortion, intentional insult and criminal intimidation under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) and relevant sections of the IPC.

Police said Bengali has not been arrested so far.

According to police records, Bengali has an extensive criminal history, with 32 property-related cases registered against him. His previous cases include offences registered at Kalamna police station under sections related to house-breaking, theft and other property crimes.

Yadav also has previous cases registered against him, including cases under sections of the IPC and BNS.

Police records further indicate that preventive action had earlier been taken against Bengali under Section 110(e) of the CrPC, and he was detained under preventive measures in November 2023.

The police are investigating the extortion allegation and the circumstances surrounding the threats.
