Nagpur: Kotwali police have arrested a 37-year-old beggar accused of murdering another homeless man during a heated altercation at a temporary shelter near Gangabai Dahan Ghat.
The deceased, identified as Suraj Shankar Meshram (35), a resident of Corporation Colony, Gangabai Ghat, earned his living by cleaning at the shelter and begging nearby. The accused, Devaraj Bhajanlal Yadav (37), a native of Harai village in Chhindwara district, Madhya Pradesh, was also living at the same place.
On October 25, 2025, between 8.30 pm and 9.00 pm, a dispute broke out between the two, following which Devaraj allegedly struck Meshram on the head with an iron rod attached to a broom. Meshram sustained critical injuries and was rushed to Mayo Hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries on October 30 during treatment.
Initially, the case was registered as an accidental death. However, based on post-mortem findings and further inquiry, PSI Mane of Kotwali Police registered an offence under Section 103(1) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) and arrested the accused. Further investigation is underway..
