Raigad: In a major setback for tourists and trekking enthusiasts planning a visit to the historic Raigad Fort during the monsoon season, the Raigad district administration has temporarily closed the fort's main stairway route for two days after a landslide struck the Mahadarwaja area following heavy rainfall.

District Collector and Chairman of the District Disaster Management Authority, Kishan Jawale, has ordered the closure of the stairway access route to Raigad Fort on June 24 and June 25, 2026, citing public safety concerns.

Landslide Blocks Main Access Route to Raigad Fort

According to officials, incessant rainfall on June 23 triggered a landslide near the Mahadarwaja, one of the key entry points to the fort. The debris blocked the stairway route used by thousands of visitors every year to reach the hilltop fort, which served as the capital of the Maratha Empire under Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj.

Authorities said restoration work is being carried out on a war footing by the concerned departments. The route will remain closed until the debris is cleared and the area is declared safe for public movement.

Popular Trekking Destination Affected During Monsoon Travel Season

The closure comes at a time when Raigad Fort witnesses a surge in footfall from tourists, history enthusiasts, and trekkers, especially during the monsoon season. The fort is one of Maharashtra's most popular trekking destinations, attracting visitors from Mumbai, Pune, Nagpur, and other parts of the state.

With an extended weekend approaching for many travellers, authorities expect several tourists to have planned trips to the fort. The administration has urged visitors to postpone their trek and avoid attempting to access the fort through the closed stairway route.

Strict Action Against Rule Violators

The order was issued under the provisions of the Disaster Management Act, 2005, following a request from the Mahad Tehsildar.

The Raigad Superintendent of Police has been directed to deploy adequate security personnel at key entry points, including Nane Darwaja, Chitta Darwaja, and surrounding areas of Raigad Fort, to prevent unauthorized access.

Officials have warned that any person violating the closure order may face legal action under Sections 51, 54, and 56 of the Disaster Management Act, 2005.

Advisory for Tourists and Trekkers

The district administration has appealed to all tourists, trekking groups, and travel operators to cooperate with authorities and refrain from using the stairway route until further notice. Visitors are advised to check official updates before planning their trip to Raigad Fort, particularly during the ongoing monsoon season when landslides and slippery terrain can pose significant risks.
