Nagpur: Raising serious concerns over the deteriorating law and order situation in Nagpur, West Nagpur MLA Vikas Thakre strongly criticized the Maharashtra government during the third day of the ongoing Monsoon Session of the State Legislature. Thakre highlighted the alarming rise in crimes across the city, including murders, crimes against women, juvenile delinquency, drug trafficking, vehicle thefts, and the growing influence of land mafias.

Addressing the Legislative Assembly, MLA Thakre pointed out that according to the National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB) 2024 report, Nagpur recorded 88 murder cases, making it the second-highest among 19 metropolitan cities in India in terms of murder rate.

He further stated that juvenile crime has witnessed a significant increase in recent years. While 210 cases were registered in 2022, the number rose to 283 cases in 2024. Crimes against women have also increased sharply, from 1,259 cases in 2022 to 1,513 cases in 2024, indicating a worrying trend.

Citing NCRB data, Thakre informed the House that Nagpur ranks:

  • 7th among metropolitan cities in crimes against women
  • 5th in rape cases
  • 3rd in sexual harassment cases
  • 4th in human trafficking-related offences

The MLA also revealed that in the first five months of 2026 alone, Nagpur city recorded 37 murders and a staggering 752 vehicle theft cases, underscoring what he described as an “explosion of criminal activities” in the city.

Growing Drug Trafficking Threat

Thakre expressed concern over Nagpur increasingly emerging as a major hub for illegal drug trade. He warned that rising narcotics trafficking and the crimes associated with it are posing a serious threat to the future of the city's youth.

Land Mafia Activities Creating Fear Among Citizens

The legislator also raised the issue of organized land mafia operations in Nagpur. He alleged that cases involving encroachment on government and private lands, illegal land grabbing through forged documents, and increasing complaints related to land disputes have created an atmosphere of fear among residents.

Demand for Strong Government Action

In light of these developments, MLA Vikas Thakre sought a clear response from the state government regarding the special measures taken or proposed to curb rising crime, protect women, address juvenile delinquency, tackle drug trafficking, prevent vehicle thefts, and dismantle land mafia networks. He also questioned the reasons behind delays in implementing effective action.

“The safety and security of Nagpur citizens have become a matter of grave concern. Mere announcements are not enough; the government must take strict and result-oriented action to bring crime under control,” Thakre asserted in the Assembly.
