Nagpur: In a major administrative reshuffle, the Maharashtra Home Department has appointed senior IPS officer Vishwas Nangre Patil as the new Commissioner of Police for Nagpur. The official transfer orders were issued on Tuesday evening.

Outgoing Police Commissioner Dr Ravinder Singal has been transferred to the Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) as Additional Director General of Police (ADGP), while Nangre Patil, who was serving as ADGP, has been entrusted with leading the Nagpur Police Commissionerate.

Key Appointment Amid Rising Crime Concerns in Nagpur

The appointment comes at a crucial time when Nagpur, Maharashtra's second capital and the home city of the Chief Minister, has been facing increasing concerns over law and order. The city has witnessed a rise in criminal activities in recent months, prompting demands for stronger policing and stricter enforcement measures.

According to available crime data, Nagpur reported 14 murder cases in May alone, raising concerns among citizens and public representatives. Despite ongoing anti-narcotics initiatives, including Operation Thunder, illegal trafficking of narcotic substances such as MD drugs and ganja continues to pose a significant challenge for law enforcement agencies.

Incidents involving attacks on police personnel have further highlighted the growing law-and-order challenges in the city.

High Expectations from 'Firebrand' Officer

Widely known for his disciplined, courageous, and proactive policing style, Vishwas Nangre Patil enjoys a reputation as one of Maharashtra's most prominent IPS officers. His appointment is being viewed as a strategic move by the state government to strengthen policing, curb rising crime, and restore public confidence.

Sources indicate that Nangre Patil has been assigned the responsibility of improving law and order, enhancing crime control measures, and boosting the efficiency of the Nagpur Police Department.

Political Attention on Nagpur's Law and Order Situation

Nagpur's law-and-order situation has remained a subject of political debate and public discussion over the past several months. Rising crime rates, drug trafficking cases, and concerns over public safety have frequently been raised in political forums, including the Maharashtra Legislature.

Against this backdrop, the appointment of Vishwas Nangre Patil is being seen as a significant administrative decision aimed at addressing these concerns and bringing renewed focus to policing and crime prevention in the city.

Citizens and stakeholders are now looking to the new Police Commissioner to implement effective strategies to tackle organized crime, drug-related offences, and other law-and-order challenges facing Nagpur.
