Nagpur: In a determined effort to prevent obstruction of public roads due to private functions, the Nagpur Municipal Corporation (NMC) has taken action against 7,118 individuals in the last six months for erecting unauthorized pandals, shamianas, and decorative arches on city roads. The civic body has recovered a total of ₹79.23 lakh in penalties during this period.
Between January 1 and June 30, 2025, NMC’s nuisance detection squads carried out these actions as part of the ongoing ‘Swachh Nagpur, Sundar Nagpur’ campaign. The drive is being implemented under the leadership of Municipal Commissioner and Administrator Dr. Abhijit Chaudhari, with additional guidance from Mrs. Vasumana Pant, Vaishnavi B., and Ajay Charthankar.
Blocking Public Roads for Private Events Under Watch
Officials revealed that many citizens continue to block public roads by setting up structures for personal events, causing inconvenience to commuters and emergency services. To address this, NMC has formed zonal teams to monitor and act on such violations. Citizens are also encouraged to report such cases, following which swift action is taken.
Dharampeth, Hanuman Nagar Among Worst Offenders
The Dharampeth zone saw the highest number of violations, with 1,212 cases and fines totaling ₹17.89 lakh. The Hanuman Nagar zone followed with 1,174 violations and ₹11.59 lakh in fines, while the Nehru Nagar zone recorded 563 cases and ₹8.89 lakh recovered.
Public Awareness the Goal
NMC officials emphasized that the initiative isn’t just punitive, but also aims to raise awareness among citizens about responsible use of public spaces. The nuisance detection drive will continue in the coming months to ensure smooth traffic flow and a cleaner, obstruction-free Nagpur.
