Mumbai: The Nagpur Vidhan Bhavan is all set for a transformative expansion with the construction of a grand and iconic seven-storey administrative complex, bringing together key legislative and executive functions under one roof. The blueprint for the ambitious project was presented on Tuesday in Mumbai, with Maharashtra Legislative Assembly Speaker Adv. Rahul Narwekar emphasizing the need for a magnificent and historically respectful structure.
The presentation event was attended by several senior leaders, including Legislative Council Chairman Prof. Ram Shinde, Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, Deputy Chief Ministers Eknath Shinde and Ajit Pawar, Parliamentary Affairs Minister Chandrakant Patil, and Public Works Minister Shivraj Bhosale. Renowned architect Hafeez Contractor unveiled the architectural plans.
Key Highlights of the Proposed Expansion
• A seven-storey main complex will be constructed within the existing Nagpur Vidhan Bhavan campus.
• The new building will preserve the heritage architecture of the current structure.
• It will house:
• Central Hall
• Assembly Hall
• Legislative Council Hall
• Offices for the Chief Minister, Deputy CMs, Speaker, Council Chairman, and Leaders of Opposition
• A separate six-storey building for Cabinet members will also be developed nearby.
• Additional facilities will include:
• Underground parking
• Cafeteria
• Visitor lounges
• Security installations
New 14-Storey Ministerial Building on Printing Press Land
Land currently occupied by the Government Printing Press has been transferred for the project. A 14-storey administrative building spread across 4 lakh square feet will be constructed for ministerial offices. This structure will be connected to the Vidhan Bhavan via an underground tunnel, ensuring seamless access.
Green Building and Public-Friendly Design Emphasized
Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis urged the inclusion of eco-friendly and green building practices in the construction. He also stressed the need to ensure ample public space and cafeteria facilities for visitors to the complex.
The project will be implemented by the Maharashtra Infrastructure Development Corporation (MIDC). Speaker Narwekar has instructed the corporation to prepare and submit a detailed project proposal at the earliest.
Once completed, the upgraded Vidhan Bhavan complex in Nagpur will stand as a symbol of modern governance, sustainability, and architectural excellence, while maintaining the cultural heritage of the state legislature.
