Nagpur: In a shocking incident at Nagpur Central Jail, an inmate allegedly died by suicide using the elastic band from his underwear, police officials confirmed on Wednesday.

The deceased, whose identity is yet to be officially disclosed, was reportedly battling depression. According to jail authorities, the incident occurred on Tuesday night within the inmate’s cell. He was found hanging from the barricade using the innerwear elastic as a noose.

Jail staff discovered the body early Wednesday morning and immediately shifted the inmate to Government Medical College and Hospital (GMCH), where he was declared dead. A post-mortem examination was conducted to confirm the cause of death.

Following the incident, an offence has been registered at Dhantoli Police Station, and further investigations are underway to ascertain the exact circumstances leading to the suicide.

Authorities are also likely to review jail surveillance and mental health monitoring protocols in the wake of the incident.
