Nagpur: A habitual fraudster, already under arrest in another cheating case by Sakkardara Police, has now been booked by Imamwada Police for allegedly cheating his elderly relative of ₹10.47 lakh by promising to arrange a residential plot at a low price.

The accused has been identified as Kamlesh Ganpat Hanwate, a resident of Somwari Peth, Nagpur.

According to the complaint filed by Parvatibai Bakaramji Hanwate, a senior citizen residing at Rajabaksha Layout, Medical Chowk, Imamwada, the accused is her close relative (grandson of her nephew) and used to visit her frequently, earning her complete trust.

Police said that in 2023, the accused allegedly told the complainant that he could help her purchase a good residential plot at a much lower price. Trusting his assurance, she handed over ₹6 lakh in cashalong with 14 tolas of gold jewellery, taking the total value of the property entrusted to him to ₹10.47 lakh.

The valuables allegedly included:

  • Two gold bangles (2.5 tolas) worth ₹75,000
  • A gold mangalsutra (3.5 tolas) worth ₹1.05 lakh
  • A two-tola gold chain worth ₹60,000
  • Gold earrings (2 tolas) worth ₹60,000
  • Four one-tola gold rings worth ₹1.20 lakh
  • Gold coins weighing 9 grams worth ₹27,000
  • ₹6 lakh in cash

However, instead of purchasing the promised plot, the accused allegedly misappropriated the money and jewellery, failed to provide any property, and later threatened to kill the complainant when she demanded the return of her money and valuables.

Based on the complaint, Imamwada Police have registered Crime No. 247/2026 under Sections 318(4) (cheating), 351(3) (criminal intimidation) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), along with Sections 420 and 506 of the Indian Penal Code, as mentioned in the FIR. Further investigation is underway.

Police sources said the accused is a habitual offender and has already been arrested by Sakkardara Police in another similar cheating case, indicating a pattern of targeting victims through false promises of property deals.
