Nagpur: The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has suspended the food licences and registrations of three hotels in Nagpur after inspections revealed multiple violations of food safety and hygiene standards, including rat infestation, poor sanitation and improper food storage practices.
The establishments facing action are Yarana Family Garden Restaurant at Jagdish Nagar, Hazari Pahad, Indian Tandoor at Monarch Co-operative Society, Friends Colony on Katol Road, and The Hut Family Restaurant on Fetri-Kalmeshwar Road.
According to the FDA, the suspension came into effect on July 12 as part of its ongoing drive against hotels and restaurants violating provisions of the Food Safety and Standards Act, 2006. The licences will remain suspended until the owners rectify all shortcomings and comply with food safety norms to the satisfaction of the department.
During the inspections, officials found several serious lapses that posed potential risks to public health. The kitchens of the establishments were reportedly operating in open areas, while mandatory food registration certificates were not prominently displayed.
The inspection team also detected rat infestation in kitchens and surrounding premises. Food handlers were found working without essential protective gear such as caps and aprons, and the hotels failed to produce medical fitness certificates for employees. Officials further observed that no laboratory reports were available to certify the quality of potable water used for cooking and food preparation.
The FDA also noted the absence of pest control records and found refrigerators and deep freezers in an unhygienic condition. Vegetarian and non-vegetarian food items were being stored together in the same freezer, violating food safety protocols. In addition, dining areas were exposed to dust and insects, while excessive smoke had blackened kitchen walls and ceilings, indicating poor maintenance and inadequate ventilation.
The FDA has directed the hotel managements to address all deficiencies before their food licences and registrations can be restored. The department said inspections will continue across the city to ensure compliance with food safety regulations and safeguard public health.
