New Delhi: Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha and Congress MP Rahul Gandhi on Thursday reached the office of the Deputy Commissioner of Police (Central) in New Delhi and staged a sit in, demanding that an FIR be registered over the alleged use of pellet guns against students during a protest in the capital.
Rahul Gandhi was accompanied by Sahil Lochab, a youth who claims to have suffered injuries from pellet fire during the July 20 protest. Before heading to the DCP office, Gandhi also visited the Sansad Marg Police Station to press for registration of a case. According to sources, he decided to continue his protest after police refused to register the FIR.
The Congress has alleged that Rapid Action Force (RAF) personnel used pellet guns during the “Sansad Chalo” march organised on July 20 in connection with the NEET-UG paper leak controversy. The party says several students sustained injuries in the days that followed. The Delhi Police has denied the allegation.
The protest was called by the Cockroach Janta Party (CJP), which had led student demonstrations over the NEET-UG 2026 paper leak issue. Thousands of students gathered at Jantar Mantar on July 20 and attempted to march towards Parliament, turning the event into one of the largest street protests of the Modi government’s third term.
The agitation later intensified and became politically significant after then-Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan resigned, one of the key demands raised by the protesting students.
The issue also caused repeated disruptions during the Monsoon Session of Parliament, with Opposition MPs demanding answers from the government over the alleged use of force on students. While the government said it was ready for discussion, the Opposition insisted on knowing who authorised the action.
Rahul Gandhi has said the case must be investigated and that action should be taken if the allegations are found to be true.
