Maharashtra Food and Drug Administration (FDA) Commissioner Tukaram Mundhe has announced a statewide ban on the sale of loose edible oil, saying that from the 20th, only sealed and packaged oil will be allowed for sale across the state.
The move is aimed at improving food safety and preventing adulteration, contamination and quality concerns that can arise when oil is sold directly from bulk containers into customers' own bottles or cans. Mundhe said the new rule is intended to ensure that consumers receive oil that is properly packed, traceable and safer for use.
Under the new order, traders, manufacturers and sellers will no longer be permitted to sell edible oil loose over the counter. From now on, only sealed packs will be allowed in the market.
The FDA has also warned that violations will invite strict action. Mundhe said offenders could face imprisonment and fines of up to ₹10 lakh, underscoring that the department will not treat the rule lightly.
The ban is expected to affect many small and medium retailers who have traditionally sold edible oil in bulk. However, the FDA says the step is necessary to protect consumers and bring greater transparency and accountability into the supply chain.
With the new order in place, the message from the authorities is clear: edible oil must be sold in sealed packaging, and anyone ignoring the rule will face legal action.
