Nagpur: As technology has transformed watches, mobile phones, and television into smart devices, Maharashtra’s power sector is now undergoing a similar digital upgrade. Maharashtra State Electricity Distribution Company Limited (MSEDCL / Mahavitaran) has rolled out Smart TOD (Time of Day) electricity meters for 3.16 crore consumers across the state, offering not only accurate billing but also a unique opportunity to save on electricity tariffs.
Despite certain misleading rumors circulating about the initiative, officials clarified that the new system is completely consumer-friendly and highly beneficial.
What Are Smart TOD Meters?
Smart TOD meters operate on advanced digital technology and record electricity usage based on different time slots throughout the day. The key benefit:
Consumers using electricity between 9 AM and 5 PM will get a discount of 80 paise to ₹1 per unit.
This discount has been in effect since July 1, 2025, marking the first-ever tariff reduction of this kind for household consumers in Maharashtra.
Major Savings for Domestic Consumers
With the new tariff and Smart TOD benefits:
- A household consuming 100 units per month previously paid around ₹875.
- With TOD discounts, the same bill can now drop to around ₹784.
This means consumers can save money simply by using smart technology and shifting usage to discounted hours.
Smart Meter Installation Completely Free
MSEDCL confirmed that consumers do not have to pay anything for the installation. Key points:
- Smart meters are 100% free.
- They eliminate issues of estimated or average billing.
- Only the actual consumed units will be billed.
- The system remains postpaid, similar to the existing monthly billing cycle.
- Hour-by-hour consumption details will be available on MSEDCL’s dedicated mobile app.
- Even when homes are locked, meter readings automatically sync with the central system.
A Boon for Solar Energy Users
Consumers installing rooftop solar systems under the Pradhan Mantri Suryaghar Muft Bijli Yojana will greatly benefit.
Smart meters support net-metering, ensuring accurate measurement of both:
- Electricity supplied back to the grid
- Electricity consumed by the household
This makes solar accounting transparent and hassle-free.
Part of Natural Technology Upgradation
MSEDCL clarified that meter replacement is a routine, natural process:
- Mechanical meters were earlier replaced by digital meters
- Now, digital meters are being upgraded to advanced smart meters
- No loans have been taken for this project; it is funded through Central Government grants
MSEDCL Appeals to Consumers
“Consumers should not fall prey to any rumors. Smart meters have been introduced to increase transparency and reduce electricity bills. Embrace the technology and lower your power expenses,” said Yogesh Vitankar, MSEDCL PRO.
