Nagpur: The Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB), Nagpur, has taken into custody the Head of the Surgery Department at Indira Gandhi Government Medical College and Hospital (Mayo Hospital), Nagpur, along with a stenographer for allegedly demanding a bribe of Rs 30,000 to issue a medical board recommendation and certificate.
According to the ACB, the complainant is an Assistant Motor Vehicle Inspector posted at the Sub-Regional Transport Office (RTO) in Wardha. The officer had been on medical leave for the past three months and was directed to appear before the Medical Board at Indira Gandhi Government Medical College, Nagpur, to obtain a recommendation and certificate required for rejoining duty.
The complainant alleged that Medical Board Chairman and Head of the Surgery Department, Dr. Nandkishore Kamalnarayan Jaiswal, and stenographer Ashish Metekar demanded Rs 30,000 to issue the required documents.
During verification proceedings conducted on June 24, the ACB found that the accused had allegedly demanded Rs 30,000 and later agreed to accept Rs 20,000 following negotiations. However, the suspects reportedly developed suspicion about the complainant and did not accept the bribe amount.
On June 30, the ACB took both accused into custody. The process of registering a case for demand of bribe at Tehsil Police Station in Nagpur is underway.
The operation was conducted under the guidance of ACB Nagpur Superintendent of Police Dr. Digambar Pradhan, Additional Superintendents of Police Madhuri Baviskar and Vijay Mahulkar, and under the supervision of Deputy Superintendents of Police Mahesh Bhortekar and Bharati Gurunule. The trap team was led by Police Inspector Jitendra Vairagade along with other ACB personnel.
The ACB has appealed to citizens in Nagpur, Wardha, Bhandara, Gondia, Gadchiroli, Chandrapur and neighbouring districts to immediately report any government official, employee or agent demanding bribes beyond prescribed government fees. The bureau assured that complaints would be acted upon promptly, the trap money would be returned within one month, and the complainant’s legitimate pending government work would also be facilitated.
