“Drug-Free Nagpur, Safe Nagpur” campaign gains momentum with enforcement, awareness and public participation
Nagpur: The Nagpur City Police’s anti-drug campaign “Operation Thunder 2.0” has emerged as a large-scale and result-oriented initiative against narcotics, combining strict legal action, public awareness, preventive measures and active citizen participation to build a drug-free and safer Nagpur.
Launched under the vision of the Nagpur City Police Commissionerate, the campaign has reported significant progress in curbing drug abuse and dismantling illegal narcotics networks across the city.
Major Action Under NDPS Act
Between 2024, 2025 and January 1, 2026 to June 18, 2026, Nagpur City Police carried out an extensive crackdown under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act, recording substantial results:
- 1,168 drug-related cases registered
- 1,515 accused arrested
- Narcotic substances worth over ₹23.21 crore seized
- Action taken against 756 drug-dependent individuals
- 840 persons taken into custody
Large Quantities of Drugs Seized
Police seized major quantities of various narcotic substances, including:
- More than 1,567 kg of Ganja worth approximately ₹7.32 crore
- Nearly 17 kg of Mephedrone (MD) valued at around ₹15.58 crore
- Action also taken against trafficking and possession of Brown Sugar, Charas, LSD, Doda and Opium
Officials said that the major operations against synthetic drugs such as Mephedrone (MD) highlight Nagpur Police’s growing investigative capability and commitment to tackling organised narcotics crime.
Public Awareness Drives Reach Over 1.44 Lakh Citizens
Operating under the campaign theme “Evidence is Clear: Invest in Prevention,” Nagpur Police conducted extensive awareness programmes across educational institutions and public spaces over the last two years.
Awareness campaign highlights:
- 600 awareness programmes in schools and colleges
Participation: 1,04,600 students and youth
- 66 sports activities
Participation: 13,900 citizens
- 72 anti-drug rallies
Participation: 10,580 citizens
- 42 street play performances
Audience reached: 5,900 citizens
- 40 essay and drawing competitions
Participation: 5,670 students
- 28 counselling sessions
Beneficiaries: 3,640 individuals
- 2 Tiger Marathons and public walk initiatives
Participation: 40,000 citizens
Overall outreach:
- More than 850 awareness programmes conducted
- Direct participation of over 1.44 lakh citizens
- Social media outreach exceeding 50 lakh people
Anti-Drug Messages Screened Across City Cinemas
To strengthen public outreach, anti-drug awareness messages were displayed in 34 cinema halls across Nagpur.
Campaign impact through theatres:
- 8,121 seating capacity
- 5 shows daily
- Daily reach of 32,485 viewers
- Total outreach to 2,27,395 citizens
Tough Measures Against Organised Drug Crime
Nagpur Police also intensified legal action to dismantle drug trafficking networks and organised criminal groups.
Key legal actions include:
- 2 proposals approved under PIT-NDPS
- 5 additional proposals under process
- Action against 4 organised crime gangs under MCOCA
- Zero Tolerance Policy against drug trafficking, illegal networks and organised crime

Nagpur City Police urged citizens to immediately report any information, suspicious activity or complaints related to narcotics.
