Nagpur: Cyber Police have registered a case against unidentified persons for allegedly creating fake Instagram accounts using a woman’s photographs without her permission and sending follow requests to her friends and other people in an attempt to defame her.
According to the complaint, the accused allegedly created two Instagram accounts between 2 pm on September 28 and 2 pm on September 30.
Police said the accused allegedly used the complainant’s photograph as the display picture of the fake accounts and uploaded several of her photographs without her consent.
The accused allegedly sent follow requests from the fake accounts to the complainant’s friends and other people, purportedly to establish connections with them while using her identity.
The complainant approached the Cyber Police after discovering the alleged misuse of her photographs and identity online.
Based on her statement, Cyber Police registered a case under relevant provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), Information Technology Act, including provisions relating to online impersonation, cheating and stalking.
Police are investigating the fake Instagram accounts and efforts are underway to identify the person or persons operating them.
