Nagpur: Gittikhadan Police have registered a case against a 46-year-old man under the Muslim Women (Protection of Rights on Marriage) Act, 2019, for allegedly pronouncing instant triple talaq to his legally wedded wife during his wedding reception with another woman.
The accused has been identified as Mohammad Rafiq (46), a resident under Kotwali Police Station in Nagpur.
According to the complaint, the 36-year-old woman married the accused on December 7, 2012, as per Muslim customs. The couple has a son born in 2017.
Police said the complainant alleged that the accused had been picking quarrels with her without any reason since 2021. A matrimonial dispute between the couple has been pending before a court since 2024.
On July 4, 2026, the complainant reportedly learnt that the accused was getting married again. She, along with her family members, reached Zeeshan Mansion Hall at Awasthi Nagar Chowk in Gittikhadan, where the reception ceremony was underway.
When she questioned the accused, he allegedly told her, “Main tumhe abhi talaq deta hoon,” and then pronounced “Talaq, Talaq, Talaq” three times, claiming that the divorce had taken effect. He allegedly further told her, “Tere se jo banta hai, woh kar le,” and refused to accept her as his wife.
Based on the woman’s complaint, Gittikhadan Police registered a case on July 14 under Section 4 of the Muslim Women (Protection of Rights on Marriage) Act, 2019. Further investigation is underway.
