Nagpur Circle Contributes 17.72% of Maharashtra’s Total Solar Installations

Nagpur: The Government of India’s ambitious PM Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana is rapidly transforming India’s clean energy landscape, and Maharashtra State Electricity Distribution Company Limited (MSEDCL)’s Nagpur Circle has emerged as one of the top-performing regions in the state.

In a landmark achievement, 1,00,708 consumers across Nagpur District and Wardha District have successfully installed rooftop solar power systems under the scheme.

Significantly, Nagpur Circle alone accounts for 17.72% of all rooftop solar projects installed within MSEDCL’s operational area across Maharashtra. In terms of installed solar generation capacity, Nagpur’s share stands at 17.78%, making it a leading contributor to Maharashtra’s solar energy movement.

Nagpur District Emerges as Major Solar Energy Hub

Among the total installations, Nagpur district recorded 82,601 rooftop solar consumers, while Wardha district contributed 18,107 consumers under the scheme.

Together, these 1 lakh-plus solar projects have created a combined electricity generation capacity of 382.6 megawatts (MW). Of this:

  • Nagpur district accounts for 317.82 MW
  • Wardha district contributes 64.76 MW

The achievement highlights the growing adoption of renewable energy in the Vidarbha region and positions Nagpur prominently on Maharashtra’s solar energy map.

Maharashtra Crosses 5.68 Lakh Solar Consumers

Across Maharashtra, more than 5,68,293 consumers under MSEDCL have adopted rooftop solar systems through the PM Surya Ghar scheme. The total installed capacity statewide has now reached 2,151.69 MW.

The primary objective of the scheme is to provide up to 300 units of free electricity every month to ordinary households through solar energy generation.

Subsidy Benefits Under PM Surya Ghar Scheme

One of the major attractions of the scheme is the direct subsidy provided by the Central Government:

  • Rs 30,000 subsidy for 1 kW systems
  • Rs 60,000 subsidy for 2 kW systems
  • Up to Rs 78,000 subsidy for systems of 3 kW and above

The subsidy amount is directly transferred to beneficiaries’ bank accounts.

Officials said that the investment made in rooftop solar systems is generally recovered within 3 to 4 years through electricity bill savings. After that, consumers can enjoy nearly free electricity for the next 20 to 25 years, significantly reducing household power expenses.

Net Metering Turning Consumers into Power Producers

The scheme also offers the benefit of “net metering.” If consumers generate more electricity than they use, the surplus power is supplied to MSEDCL through the grid.

The value of this excess electricity is adjusted in the consumer’s electricity bill or paid back, effectively turning households from mere electricity consumers into electricity producers.

Chief Engineer Dilip Dodke Appeals Citizens to Join Green Energy Movement

Appealing to more citizens, housing societies, and apartment owners to adopt solar energy, Dilip Dodke urged residents to register on the official PM Surya Ghar portal and convert their homes into “Surya Ghar.”

He stated that apart from personal financial benefits, the scheme will also strengthen India’s energy security and support the nation’s green energy goals amid rising global temperatures.
