Nagpur: Lakadganj Police have arrested an e-rickshaw driver in connection with the robbery of a passenger who was allegedly assaulted and robbed by three men after being lured into a vehicle in central Nagpur.
According to police, complainant Kuldeep Kishansingh Thakur (28), originally from Jabalpur in Madhya Pradesh and currently staying near Dharampeth, boarded an e-rickshaw from Marwadi Chowk on the night of June 13 to travel towards Dharampeth.
Two men were already seated in the vehicle. During the journey, the driver stopped near a liquor shop at Telephone Chowk and asked the complainant to make an online payment for liquor and other items, claiming he did not have money.
Police said the driver later diverted the vehicle towards the Maldhakka Road area near the Itwari railway tracks. There, the two passengers and the driver allegedly restrained the victim, assaulted him with a wooden stick and forcibly robbed him.
The accused allegedly fled with Rs 1,000 in cash, a mobile phone, a bank ATM card and a PAN card, collectively valued at around Rs 9,000.
Following technical analysis and intelligence gathering, Lakadganj Police identified and apprehended the e-rickshaw driver, Sheikh Wasim Akram Mohammad Rafiq (38), a resident of Mominpura.
During interrogation, the accused allegedly confessed to committing the robbery with the help of accomplices. He has been arrested, while efforts are underway to trace the remaining accused.
