Nagpur: Deputy Commissioner of Police (Zone 2) Nityanand Jha has added another feather to his cap beyond policing — co-authoring a UPSC book that has become a popular choice among Civil Services aspirants.

The book, Indian Society, written for the General Studies Paper 1 syllabus of the UPSC Mains, was co-authored by Jha along with IAS officer Ayushi Singh under the mentorship of Dr. Ravi P. Agrahari, a well-known UPSC author associated with McGraw Hill Publications. The first edition, released on January 8, 2024, sold over 6,000 copies, reflecting its strong acceptance among aspirants.

Jha, the Sociology topper of CSE 2018, initially hesitated to take on the project while serving as Sub-Divisional Police Officer (SDPO) in Palghar. With encouragement from Ayushi Singh and guidance from Dr. Agrahari, he completed the 10-chapter book in about six months. “During my Palghar posting, I started working on the book. It took around six months to complete the first edition. So far, 6,180 copies have been sold,” Jha said.

Encouraged by the positive response, the publishing house approached Jha and Singh again to revise the book in line with the updated UPSC syllabus. “We worked on the revised edition and completed it in about two months,” Jha revealed. The second edition is set to hit the shelves shortly.

Sharing a personal memory from his UPSC preparation days in Delhi’s Rajendra Nagar, Jha recalled how the theft of his laptop and the indifferent response at a police station left a lasting impression. “That incident had a deep impact on me. I resolved that if I ever wore the Khaki, I would ensure every complaint, big or small, is treated with seriousness and respect,” he said.

Since joining the Maharashtra Police in 2021, Jha has served as SDPO in Boisar (Palghar), Additional SP in Gondia, and is currently posted as DCP in Nagpur. Known for his people-centric approach, he continues to combine professional policing with social awareness.

Through Indian Society, Jha aims not only to help UPSC aspirants prepare effectively but also to inspire them to become officers committed to serving society with integrity and compassion.
