Nagpur: In recognition of the religious, scientific, and economic significance of cows since ancient times, the Maharashtra government has declared indigenous cows as “Rajmata - Gomata.” This decision aims to promote the rearing and protection of indigenous cattle breeds in the state, which are seeing a rapid decline in numbers.

The order highlights the essential role cows have played in human life, especially since the Vedic period, where they were revered and referred to as “Kamdhenu.” Several indigenous breeds, such as Devani and Lal Kandhari in Marathwada, Khillari in western Maharashtra, Dangi in northern Maharashtra, and Gawli in Vidarbha, are native to the state.

The government expressed concern over the decreasing population of these breeds. Indigenous cow milk is highly nutritious and considered a complete food for human consumption. Moreover, cow dung and urine are valuable in organic farming, and the use of Panchagavya in Ayurveda treatments underscores the cultural and medical importance of these animals.

Given this backdrop, the state government has decided to bestow the title “Rajmata - Gomata” upon indigenous cows to encourage livestock farmers to focus on their rearing and conservation.

The official government order can be accessed on the Maharashtra government website with reference number 202409301030174301. The directive has been issued with digital signatures, under the orders of the Governor of Maharashtra.
