Four Women Arrested for Illegal Liquor Sale on Gandhi Jayanti in Nagpur

Nagpur: In a series of coordinated raids, the Nagpur police apprehended four women involved in the illegal sale of liquor on Wednesday, October 2, despite the statewide alcohol ban in place for Mahatma Gandhi Jayanti.


The first raid was conducted by Yashodharanagar police around 2:20 PM near Sanjay Gandhi Nagar, Bahujan Hitay Buddha Vihar. Acting on reliable information, the police found Saroj Anand Borkar (60) illegally selling liquor. Upon further investigation, it was revealed that her relative, Rakhi Arvind Motghare (48), had stored a significant quantity of alcohol at her residence. A raid on Rakhi's home resulted in the seizure of 522 bottles of country liquor (Santra 5000), 48 bottles of Royal Stag, 63 bottles of Imperial Blue, and 58 bottles of McDowell’s No. 1, with a total value of ₹46,170.


Both women were arrested, and a case was registered under Section 65(E) of the Maharashtra Prohibition Act based on a complaint filed by constable Amol Bhamburkar.


In a separate operation, the Zone 3 special team raided multiple locations in Pachpaoli. At 5:30 PM, they arrested Lalita Sagar Dhanvijay (62) in Adarsh Nagar for selling 30 bottles of country liquor worth ₹1,050. 


Another raid followed between 7:15 PM and 7:45 PM at Rambhaji Road, where Yashodabai Narayan Bangde (70) was found selling 15 liters of Mohafula and 278 bottles of country liquor (Santra), valued at ₹14,120.


All three women were taken into custody, and cases were registered under Section 65(E) of the Maharashtra Prohibition Act. The raids were conducted under the guidance of senior police officials, including Deputy Commissioner of Police (Zone 5) Niketan Kadam and DCP (Zone 3) Mahak Swami. Further investigations are ongoing.
