Nagpur: In a unique blend of warmth and strict enforcement, Nagpur Police welcomed the New Year by greeting law-abiding motorists with flowers, while coming down heavily on those flouting traffic rules. The New Year’s Eve traffic crackdown saw 147 motorists booked for drunk driving under Operation U-Turn, sending out a clear message — responsible behaviour would be rewarded, violations would invite action.
As the city ushered in 2026, thousands of revellers took to the streets, with hotels, restaurants and clubs across Nagpur packed till late night. Amid the festive atmosphere, police maintained a high level of alertness, especially in view of recent violent incidents reported at some city clubs.
Police Commissioner Dr Ravinder Kumar Singal, along with all zonal DCPs, including DCP Rashmitha Rao, was present on the streets, personally interacting with citizens. Motorists found following traffic norms were greeted with flowers and New Year wishes, reinforcing the message of safe and responsible driving. At the same time, those violating rules, particularly drunk drivers, faced immediate penal action.
Barricades were erected at key junctions across the city, and random vehicle checks were carried out using breath analysers. Youths were seen moving along major thoroughfares exchanging greetings, while police teams ensured smooth traffic flow and prevented any untoward incidents.
Despite heavy vehicular movement and celebrations continuing into the early hours, no major road accidents were reported, highlighting the impact of the balanced approach adopted by Nagpur Police — encouragement for discipline and zero tolerance for violations on New Year’s Eve.
