Elderly Woman Robbed During Morning Walk in Nagpur; Chain Snatcher Arrested Within Days

Nagpur: In a swift breakthrough, the Crime Branch Unit No. 1 of Nagpur Police arrested a chain snatcher who targeted a 77-year-old woman during her morning walk in Laxminagar.


The incident occurred on April 4, 2026, around 9:30 am when the victim, Anupama Ashok Shiras, a resident of Swapnil Trisha Apartment in Buti Layout, was returning home on foot after her walk. Near a Jain temple in Bajaj Nagar police limits, a youth aged between 25 to 30 years approached her, struck her on the neck, and forcibly snatched her gold chain weighing approximately 10 grams worth Rs 60,000 before fleeing on an Activa scooter.


Following the complaint, Bajaj Nagar Police registered a case under relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita.


During the parallel investigation, Crime Branch Unit No. 1 used technical surveillance and credible intelligence to identify the accused. A trap was laid in Butibori, leading to the arrest of Sachin Natthu Shahu (25), a resident of Balabhaupeth, Pachpaoli.


During interrogation, the accused confessed to the crime. Police recovered the stolen gold chain and the Activa scooter (MH 49 BF 5168) used in the offence, collectively valued at Rs 1 lakh. The accused has been handed over to Bajaj Nagar Police for further legal action.


The operation was carried out by PI Dynaneshwar Bhedodkar under the guidance of senior police officials, including the Commissioner of Police and other top officers of Nagpur Police. Further investigation is underway.
