Nagpur: A dramatic escape attempt unfolded near the Nagpur Central Jail on Thursday evening when two undertrial prisoners allegedly fled from police custody and assaulted a police constable during a chase. The incident occurred around 5:30 pm on February 5 near the main entrance of the Central Jail under the jurisdiction of Dhantoli Police Station.
According to the FIR filed by Police Naik Ramrao Pawar (54), the accused — Sahil Dhiraj Lanjewar (19) and Rushikesh alias Rushi Ganesh Mankar (21) — jumped out of the police vehicle while being escorted for jail admission and attempted to escape.
Police personnel immediately pursued the duo. The chase led them behind the office of the Deputy Inspector General (DIG) of Prisons, where a confrontation ensued. During the scuffle, accused Sahil reportedly attacked Police Constable Suryaprakash Wavre with a wooden stick and also hit him on the head, right knee, elbow, and palm.
Constable Wavre was later taken for medical treatment. His injury report is awaited.
The police have seized:
- A broken wooden stick
- A blue ballpoint pen
- A nameplate belonging to Constable Wavre
Both accused were eventually detained again, medically examined, and lodged in Nagpur Central Jail.
A case under Sections 132, 121(1), 262, and 3(5) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) 2023 has been registered for escaping from lawful custody, obstructing government duties, and assaulting a police officer.
The Dhantoli Police are conducting further investigation.
