Nagpur: Mankapur Police have registered a cybercrime case against a 27-year-old man from Punefor allegedly creating a fake Instagram account in the name of his former girlfriend, uploading her private photographs, defaming her on social media, and issuing death threats to her family.

According to the FIR, the complainant is a 22-year-old woman employed in the private sector and residing in the Mankapur area of Nagpur. The alleged offences came to light on August 4, 2026, following incidents that reportedly began on June 24, 2026.

Police identified the accused as Leela Karan Singh (27), a resident of Lohegaon, Pune.

As per the complaint, the accused and the woman were previously in a romantic relationship, during which he had taken several private photographs of the complainant using his mobile phone. After the couple broke up, the accused allegedly created a fake Instagram account impersonating the woman.

Using the fake profile, he allegedly uploaded intimate photographs of the complainant, including images of him kissing her and other private photographs involving her former boyfriend. The accused also allegedly posted the images as Instagram Stories along with obscene and defamatory captions, with the intention of tarnishing her reputation.

The complainant further alleged that the accused telephoned her brother and threatened to kill him.

Based on the woman’s complaint, Mankapur Police registered a case against the accused under Sections 79, 356(2), and 351(3) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), Sections 66(C) and 67 of the Information Technology Act.

Police have initiated an investigation into the case and are taking steps to trace the accused.
