Nagpur: An unidentified burglar broke into the locked house of a 40-year-old police constable in Gorewada and stole gold and silver ornaments along with ₹72,000 in cash, collectively worth ₹6.86 lakh, police said.

The incident came to light after Suraj Shaligram Nimbalkar, a police constable residing at Narmada Housing Society near Mahalakshmi Temple in Gorewada, returned after visiting his native place in Khamgaon taluka of Buldhana district.

According to the complaint, Nimbalkar had locked the main door of his house before leaving. Between September 9 and October 2, an unidentified thief allegedly broke open the lock, entered the house and targeted an iron cupboard in the bedroom.

The burglar escaped with several gold ornaments, including rings, chains and beads, besides silver bangles, anklets and other articles. The stolen valuables also included an old Sonata wristwatch and ₹72,000 cash.

Police estimated the total value of the stolen property at ₹6,86,300.

Following Nimbalkar’s complaint, Mankapur police registered a case under Sections 305(a), 331(3) and 331(4) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) against an unidentified person. Police are investigating the house-breaking and theft.
