Nagpur: A tax inspector of the Nagpur Municipal Corporation (NMC) has alleged that two men abused him using casteist slurs, threatened to implicate him in a false case and demanded ₹30,000 in connection with a property tax reassessment application. Pachpaoli Police have registered an FIR against the two accused under provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) and the Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Act.

The complainant, Suraj Mohan Swami, 57, a resident of Indora, has been working as a tax inspector at the NMC's Pachpaoli Zone-9 office for the past two years.

The accused have been identified as Tarvinder Singh Marwah, around 62, a resident of Kashmiri Galli, and Pramod Bhagchandani, around 52, a resident of Parvati Tower, Indora Square, Pachpaoli.

According to the complaint, Bhagchandani frequently visited the civic office on behalf of other people and allegedly pressured officials to get their work done. Swami further alleged that when officials resisted, Bhagchandani would allegedly use the Right to Information (RTI) Act to seek their personal details and harass them.

Police said Marwah had submitted an application on June 26, 2026, seeking reassessment of his house tax and correction of the name in municipal records.

The complainant alleged that both men subsequently visited the office several times and demanded that the property tax be reduced. They allegedly abused him over the phone and during visits to the office, threatened to implicate him in a false case and allegedly hurled casteist slurs at him.

Swami further alleged that the accused demanded ₹30,000, claiming that he would have to pay the amount to avoid being implicated in a false case.

Based on the complaint, Pachpaoli Police registered a case under Sections 221, 224, 296, 308 and 351(2), among other relevant provisions of the BNS, and Sections 3(1)(r), 3(1)(s) and 3(2)(va) of the SC/ST (Prevention of Atrocities) Act.

Police said further investigation is underway.
