Nagpur: Nandanvan Police have registered a case against a 26-year-old man and four of his family members after his wife, also 26, alleged that they pressured her to convert to Islam following their court marriage. The woman, an architect, has also accused the five of assault, criminal intimidation and sustained mental and physical harassment.

According to the FIR, the woman married the accused, an engineer, through a court marriage under the Special Marriage Act on January 16, 2026. She told police that before the marriage, she had made it clear that she would neither renounce Hinduism nor convert to another religion.

The woman alleged that between January and September 2026, her husband, mother-in-law, sister-in-law, her sister-in-law’s mother-in-law and her sister-in-law’s brother-in-law acted together to pressure her into accepting Islam.

As per the complaint, the accused repeatedly insisted that she convert and allegedly abused her using obscene language when she refused. She further alleged that she was punched and beaten, threatened and subjected to continued mental and physical harassment at their residence in the Nandanvan area.

Based on the complaint, Nandanvan Police registered an FIR under Sections 85, 115(2), 296, 298, 302, 504 and 34 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), along with Section 3(5) and other applicable provisions relating to cruelty by a husband or his relatives.

Police said the allegations are being investigated and further action will be taken based on the findings of the probe.
