Backward-link probe from Gondkhairi consignment leads to Dadra and Nagar Haveli unit

Nagpur: Nagpur Rural police have busted an illegal manufacturing unit producing banned nylon manja in an industrial area on Demni Road in Dadra and Nagar Haveli, seizing finished kite string, machinery and other materials worth ₹6.26 crore. The action followed a backward-link investigation into a consignment intercepted in Gondkhairi in December 2025.

The seizure includes more than 88,000 spools of finished nylon manja, manufacturing machinery, raw materials and packaging supplies. Investigators found products carrying several brand names, including Gold, Shakti, Cobra, Monokite, Gold Kite, Hero Plus, Gold Shakti and Welyn Mono.

The operation was conducted under the guidance of SP Harssh Poddar and Additional SP Anil Mhaske. The investigation was led by Police Inspector Ankush Mane, in-charge of the Local Crime Branch (LCB), while a team headed by Police Inspector Snehal Raut carried out the subsequent action.

The case originated on December 8, 2025, when Kalmeshwar police intercepted a container bearing registration number GJ 21 Y 3318 at the VRL Logistics yard in Gondkhairi. The container was allegedly transporting 1,200 plastic spools of banned nylon manja worth ₹14.40 lakh. Police also seized the container, valued at ₹20 lakh, taking the total seizure to ₹34.40 lakh. The driver, Chhavinath Mohan Nishad (30), a resident of Uttar Pradesh, was arrested in connection with the case.

Following the seizure, the LCB launched an investigation to identify the source of the prohibited kite string and uncover the supply network. Investigators examined documents recovered from the container and sent teams to different states to verify addresses and establish links. An address traced in Gujarat turned out to be fake, but the police continued pursuing other leads.

The investigation eventually pointed to a manufacturing facility in Dadra and Nagar Haveli. The unit, identified as Marquee Industries, was found closed. After obtaining court permission, the LCB team, in coordination with the local administration, searched the premises on October 21, 2026, in the presence of panch witnesses.

During the search, police found machinery used to manufacture and wind nylon manja, finished spools, raw materials, powder, packaging material, rubber stamps bearing different company names and other related articles.

The seized finished nylon manja was valued at ₹5.09 crore, while the manufacturing machinery was valued at ₹95 lakh. Along with raw materials and other supplies, the total value of the seized property stood at ₹6,26,43,450.

Police are now widening the probe to identify the machinery manufacturers, suppliers and other people involved in the production and distribution network of the banned kite string.
