Nagpur: Over 50% Drunk Driving Cases Recorded in Just 18 Days Under ‘Operation U-Turn’

Nagpur: In a sharp crackdown on drunk driving, Nagpur Traffic Police, led by Deputy Commissioner of Police Lohit Matani, have booked 636 cases of drunk driving (DD) in just 18 days between July 10 and July 28, 2025, under the ongoing ‘Operation U-Turn’. Shockingly, this accounts for more than 50% of the total 1,324 DD cases recorded in the city from January 1 to July 28 this year.


The traffic police’s aggressive campaign has intensified citywide, with data indicating a significant spike in enforcement during the ongoing drive.


Here’s a breakdown of top-performing traffic zones during Operation U-Turn (July 10–28):


  • Indora: 94 cases
  • Kamptee: 86 cases
  • Sonegaon: 78 cases
  • MIDC: 77 cases
  • Sadar: 65 cases



In comparison, total figures from January 1 to July 28, 2025, show:


  • Indora: 176 cases
  • Kamptee: 166 cases
  • MIDC: 162 cases
  • Sonegaon: 154 cases
  • Lakadganj: 138 cases
  • Ajni: 141 cases



The data reveals a striking increase in enforcement during the recent 18-day window, signaling the city police’s resolve to clamp down on drunk driving.


‘Operation U-Turn’ is aimed at promoting road safety and reducing accidents caused due to alcohol-impaired driving. The police department has deployed additional manpower, breathalyzers, and surprise checkpoints across key areas, especially during late hours and weekends.


Police officials confirmed that the operation will continue in full swing in the coming weeks. They have also appealed to the public to refrain from driving under the influence of alcohol and support efforts to keep city roads safe.
