Nagpur: As part of the ongoing ‘Mission Mukti’ initiative conceptualized by Commissioner of Police Dr. Ravinder Kumar Singal, a rescue operation was conducted on Wednesday, May 21, in the Ganeshpeth Police Station jurisdiction. The drive aimed to rehabilitate homeless families who had been living on footpaths and begging around the Santra Market and Chand Shahwali Dargah area.

The core objective of ‘Mission Mukti’ is to rehabilitate destitute, homeless, and neglected individuals—especially those who are found begging or living on the streets—and integrate them back into mainstream society. Earlier phases of the mission have already been successfully implemented, and all 33 police stations across Nagpur have been directed to take active part in the initiative.

On May 21, from 11 am onward, Ganeshpeth Police launched a coordinated operation in the vicinity of Santra Market and Railway Station Gate No. 8. For several days, homeless families had taken shelter in the area, often engaging in begging and disturbing commuters, which led to rising concerns over hygiene and public inconvenience.

Inspector Machhindra Pandit of Ganeshpeth Police took the lead in planning the rescue operation in coordination with Nagpur Municipal Corporation’s (NMC) Zone 4 Junior Engineer Anant Mankar, Anti-Encroachment Squad Chief Shailesh Humne, the Social Security Department, Beggar Squad, and officials from the District Women and Child Welfare Department.

With support from the police control room, a large rescue vehicle and adequate manpower were deployed. A pre-operation briefing was conducted at Ganeshpeth Police Station for all involved personnel.

During the operation, 23 homeless individuals—including 6 men, 4 women, and 13 children—were rescued from the Santra Market area. Some initially resisted the move, but were later convinced about their relocation to Aastha Shelter Home at Ghat Road for rehabilitation. NMC’s anti-encroachment and sanitation teams also cleared and cleaned the area using JCB machinery, removing waste and abandoned belongings.

The joint operation was executed under the guidance of Commissioner Dr. Ravinder Kumar Singal, and included participation from Inspector Machhindra Pandit, Junior Engineer Anant Mankar, Shailesh Humne, Lady Police Constable Lata Gawli from the Beggar Squad, ASI Deepak Jhade, Women and Child Development Officers Megha Patil and Meenakshi Dhadade, and 5 officers and 15 personnel from Ganeshpeth Police Station.

Commissioner Singal emphasized, “‘Mission Mukti’ is not just a police-driven campaign but is being effectively implemented with the involvement of voluntary organizations. Nagpur Police continue to receive active support from social workers and various institutions, making this mission a collaborative success.”
