Nagpur: Demonstrating a strong sense of social and environmental responsibility, 40 Ganesh mandals from Zone 1 celebrated this year’s Ganesh festival without DJs or high-decibel sound systems, choosing instead to accompany their processions with traditional dhol, tasha, and devotional bhajans.

The Zone 1 police recognised their efforts at a ceremony held at the MIDC auditorium, where Deputy Commissioner of Police S. Rushikesh Reddy presented commendation certificates and saplingsto organisers who followed all police and civic guidelines throughout the 10-day celebration.

Among the honoured groups were prominent mandals such as Shiv Ganesh Utsav Mandal (Sai Nagar)Ashtavinayak Empire Mandal (Wanadongri), and Navnirman Ganesh Mandal (Pratap Nagar). Residents and devotees praised the peaceful atmosphere, noting that the absence of loud music helped reduce noise pollution and promoted a more eco-friendly environment.

DCP Reddy lauded the initiative, saying, “These 40 mandals have shown that devotion can be expressed without deafening sound. Their example is a model for the entire city.”

Police officials pointed out that while hundreds of mandals participated in the festival across Nagpur, these groups stood out for their strict adherence to noise-control norms and commitment to cultural authenticity.

Environmental activists and local residents also welcomed the DJ-free immersion, highlighting its benefits for senior citizens, patients, and urban wildlife. Many participants expressed hope that more mandals will embrace this quieter, greener celebration in the coming years, positioning Nagpur’s Ganesh festival as a statewide benchmark for sustainable festivities.
