Nagpur: A 23-year-old woman allegedly ended her life after facing continuous harassment from her husband and in-laws in the Nandanvan area. Police have arrested two of the accused in connection with the case.
The deceased, Farhanaz Numan Shaikh (23), was married to Numaj Shaikh Aziz Shaikh (32) of Vrindavan Nagar, Nandanvan, on June 20, 2025. Within a month of the marriage, her husband, along with his mother Akila Shaikh (55), sister Sana Shaikh (30), brother-in-law Shaikh Moin Shaikh Shahabuddin (35), and sister-in-law’s mother-in-law Shahjaan Shaikh (60), allegedly began physically and mentally harassing her over trivial domestic issues and demands for money from her parental home.
Unable to bear the harassment, Farhanaz reportedly hanged herself at her residence around 4 am on November 5, 2025. Initially, an accidental death was registered, but following inquiries and a formal complaint by her mother Rashida Shaikh Jabbar (50), a resident of Hasanbagh, Nandanvan, police confirmed it as a case of abetment to suicide.
The Nandanvan Police registered an offence under Sections 80, 85, 108, 115(2), 351(2), and 3(5) of the BNS, along with Sections 4 and 6 of the Dowry Prohibition Act, 1961. The husband Numaj Shaikh and brother-in-law Moin Shaikh have been arrested, while further investigation is underway.
