Nagpur: Construction work under Phase II of the Maha Metro project in Nagpur is progressing at a rapid pace, with major developments reported across the Kamthi, Wardha, Hingna, and Bhandara routes.
On the Reach-2A corridor (Automotive Square to Kanhan), a total of 333 out of 487 piers (68.30%) have been completed. Additionally, construction work is underway at 11 out of 12 metro stations on this route.
Station Construction and Girder Work in Full Swing
Station construction along the corridor is advancing quickly, with foundation work and structures up to the first and second floors already completed.
In terms of structural progress:
- 159 out of 488 girder spans (35.49%) have been completed
- Work on 2 out of 3 steel bridges and balanced cantilever structures is also in progress
Lift and Escalator Installation Begins
To enhance passenger convenience, work on lifts and escalators has officially commenced under Nagpur Metro Phase II. The installation began at the National Cancer Institute Metro Station.
The lift installation is being carried out by Otis Elevator Company India Limited, while escalator work is being executed by Johnson Lifts Private Limited. These facilities are considered crucial for improving accessibility and commuter experience across metro stations.
Work Starts on 100-Metre Steel Bridge Over Railway Line
A significant engineering milestone has been achieved under Reach-1A, where foundation work has begun for a 100-metre-long special span bridge over an Indian Railways line.
This corridor stretches 19.25 km from Khapri Metro Station to MIDC ESR Station. The bridge will feature a steel open web girder weighing approximately 1,000 metric tonnes.
The project is adopting advanced transverse launching technology, where:
- One end of the girder acts as a pivot point
- The other end is placed using skids and hydraulic jacks on pre-installed track beams
This modern method is safer and more efficient than traditional longitudinal launching, reducing the need for railway traffic blocks and minimizing risks such as instability and roller slippage.
Foundation Ceremony Conducted by MD Shravan Hardikar
The inauguration of these works was carried out by Shravan Hardikar, Managing Director of Maha Metro, through a ceremonial ground-breaking event.
Senior officials and directors of Maha Metro were also present on the occasion.
Boost to Urban Connectivity in Nagpur
With rapid progress in infrastructure, Nagpur is set to witness improved connectivity, reduced traffic congestion, and a modern public transport system under Nagpur Metro Phase II.
The project is expected to significantly enhance daily commuting while supporting sustainable urban development.
