Nagpur: What was meant to be a vibrant celebration of the centuries-old Marbat Festival turned into a security setback as dozens of mobile phones were reported stolen during the procession on Saturday, August 23.

The thefts occurred during Nagpur’s traditional Tanha Pola event—also known as the Marbat Festival—when the towering effigies of Kali Marbat and Pili (Yellow) Marbat were paraded through the crowded lanes of the city. Criminals seized the opportunity presented by packed streets to pickpocket unaware attendees.

Residents at marketplaces and processional junctions reported missing mobile devices. Local law enforcement confirmed that multiple FIRs have been officially registered, and investigations are underway.

What Is the Marbat Festival?

The Marbat Festival, observed the day after Pola, is a cultural hallmark of Nagpur—unique to the city and more than 140 years old

Historical Roots: Originating in the late 19th century, the festival combines rural rituals performed by farmers with broader social protest. Farmers initially burned clay idols on Tanha Polato ward off pests and misfortune; over time, the tradition transformed into a city-wide ceremonial procession
