Nagpur: In a shocking development, two constables from Sitabuldi police station, Pravin Wakode and Samadhan Kamble, have been suspended for allegedly assaulting a restaurant owner and attempting to extort Rs 5 lakh. The action was initiated by Police Commissioner Dr. Ravinder Singhal after media reported the incident.
The case revolves around a New Year Eve party at Farzi Café on West High Court Road, owned by Yash Dubey. During the event, another restaurant owner, Cyrus Cheng had an altercation with a woman, leading to an assault complaint against him. Initially, the case was assigned to female police sub-inspector Kavita Jagtap, but constable Wakode reportedly stole the case diary and took over the investigation.
On January 1, Wakode and Kamble allegedly detained Cheng at the police station, assaulted him, and demanded Rs 5 lakh to drop the case. The theft of the case diary was discovered, causing chaos within the station. A duplicate diary was created to cover up the misconduct.
Cyrus alerted senior officials, prompting Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP) Rahul Madne to order an investigation. Initial findings confirmed the allegations, resulting in the constables’ suspension. Further charges of extortion and theft are likely to follow.
Allegations of favoritism have surfaced, as a senior officer reportedly shielded the accused. The incident has raised serious questions about internal discipline and accountability within the police force.
